How We Make Every Visit a Great One

Our Tell-Show-Do Approach

At Eastshore Pediatric Dental Group, we use a child-centered communication technique called Tell-Show-Do with every patient, regardless of age. Here’s how it works: first, we tell your child exactly what we’re going to do using age-appropriate, kid-friendly language. Then we show them — demonstrating what each instrument looks, sounds, and feels like in a calm, nonthreatening way. Finally, we do — following through exactly as described, with no surprises.

This approach, combined with positive reinforcement and warm nonverbal communication, helps children feel in control, build trust with our team, and leave the appointment feeling proud of themselves. Most children respond beautifully to this method — and even the ones who start out nervous often become our most enthusiastic patients over time.

Visits for Younger Children (Under Age 3)

For our youngest patients, we bring parents back with their child for the entire appointment. We start with a fun tour of our office on the way to the exam chair — because familiarity breeds comfort. For very young children, we often perform the exam and cleaning in a “knee-to-knee” position, with your child resting in your lap facing our dentist. This keeps your child close to you while giving our team a clear view of their teeth.

During this first visit we screen for early cavities and high-risk areas, perform a gentle cleaning, and discuss a personalized approach to brushing and flossing based on your child’s specific needs. We also cover preventive tips, diet and cavity risk, and address any habits such as pacifier or thumb-sucking use.

It’s completely normal for young children to fuss during a dental exam — it’s a developmentally appropriate response to new experiences. Our team is thoroughly trained and well-prepared for every reaction, and we never rush. Whether your child sails through or needs extra reassurance, we’ve got them covered.

Visits for Older Children (Age 3 & Up)

Children over the age of three are usually ready to enjoy sitting in our “big kid” dental chair — leaning back, watching a movie from the screen on the ceiling, and feeling like a total pro. Parents are always welcome back for the exam so we can discuss your child’s oral health and address any specific concerns together.

At each visit for older children we perform a thorough oral and dental exam, a professional cleaning with a gentle spin brush, and a personalized review of oral hygiene techniques based on what we observe during the exam. We discuss cavity risk factors, screen for early orthodontic concerns, and tailor our X-ray schedule to each child’s individual needs. No two children are the same — and our exams reflect that. Scheduling Your Child’s First Appointment

We prefer to see younger children in the morning, when they tend to be at their most cooperative and alert. For toddlers and preschoolers especially, we recommend scheduling around nap time — a well-rested child almost always has a better appointment experience!

Tips for a Successful First Dental Visit

A little preparation goes a long way. Here are our top recommendations for parents heading in for their child’s first appointment:

Focus on the fun. Talk up the exciting parts — video games and toys in the waiting room, TVs on the ceiling, and a prize at the end. Building anticipation around the positives sets a great tone before you even arrive.

Let our team do the explaining. It’s natural to want to help prepare your child as we go, but try to let us take the lead. We use specially developed kid-friendly words and explanations for every step of the visit. Letting your child hear it from us first helps them build trust in our team — which pays off at every future visit.

Share concerns privately. If your child has had a difficult dental experience in the past, has a specific fear, or has any sensory or behavioral needs, please let us know ahead of time or pull us aside before the appointment. The more we know going in, the better we can tailor the visit to your child’s needs.

Keep your own feelings in check. Children are remarkably perceptive — they take their emotional cues directly from their parents. If you walk in calm and positive, your child is far more likely to do the same. Trust our team, take a breath, and know your child is in great hands.

Frequently Asked Questions – New Patient Visits

What should I expect at my child’s first dental visit?

Your child’s first visit at Eastshore Pediatric Dental Group is focused on building comfort and trust — not rushing through procedures. Depending on your child’s age, we may perform a gentle exam and cleaning, screen for early cavities, discuss oral hygiene and diet, and answer all of your questions. We use our Tell-Show-Do technique throughout so your child knows exactly what to expect at every step. Most children leave feeling proud and excited to come back.

Should I stay with my child during the appointment?

Absolutely. For children under three, we bring parents back for the entire visit and often perform the exam in a knee-to-knee position with your child in your lap. For older children, parents are always welcome and invited back for the exam portion so we can discuss findings and answer your questions directly. We believe in open, transparent communication with families at every visit.

What is the Tell-Show-Do technique?

Tell-Show-Do is a child psychology-based communication approach used throughout pediatric dentistry. We first tell your child what we are going to do using age-appropriate language, then show them what it looks, sounds, and feels like, and finally do it — exactly as described. This eliminates surprises, builds trust, and helps children feel in control of their experience. Combined with positive reinforcement, it is one of the most effective tools we use to help anxious children become confident dental patients.

What if my child cries or is uncooperative at their first visit?

This is completely normal, especially for very young children. Fussing or crying during a first dental visit is a developmentally appropriate response to a new experience and new faces. Our team is specially trained to work with children at every comfort level — we never rush, never force, and always adjust our approach based on how your child is responding. Many children who start out nervous become our most enthusiastic patients after just a few visits.

When is the best time to schedule a young child’s dental appointment?

We recommend scheduling appointments for younger children in the morning, when they tend to be most alert and cooperative. For toddlers and preschoolers, try to avoid scheduling during or close to nap time — a well-rested child almost always has a smoother, happier appointment.

Do you accept dental insurance for new patients?

Yes. We accept most PPO dental insurance plans as out-of-network providers and work to maximize your benefits from your very first visit. Our front office team is happy to review your plan and answer any coverage questions before your appointment. Call us at (510) 964-0168 or visit our financial information page for details.

How do I prepare my child for their first dental visit?

Talk positively about the appointment ahead of time — focus on the fun elements like our video games and toys in the waiting room, TVs on the ceiling, and the prize they get at the end. Avoid using words like “hurt,” “shot,” or “drill,” and try to stay calm and upbeat yourself, since children take strong emotional cues from their parents. If your child has any specific fears or past experiences you’d like us to know about, share them with us privately before the appointment so we can tailor the visit accordingly.
